The costumed balls were introduced and got as common as they were in the city that made them so famous, since a time when New Orleans was under French rule in the 1700s. Towards the end of the century, however, the Spanish took control of the territory and put an end to the masked parties, considering them pagan in nature, which remained outlawed until the early 1800s.

Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday in some places, is the last hurrah before the Catholic days of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. This period is often compared to the Christmas holiday seasons because of its weeks of celebrations and carnival type atmosphere in most places.
